As the Mason City Resident Construction Engineer, you will contribute to DOT’s mission by providing Supervision on the national award-winning construction administration team working on large, complex highway construction projects and overseeing multiple project contracts. This role will be responsible to:

Perform technical engineering support for the Mason City Construction Office
Overall administration and supervision of the Mason City Resident Construction Office which administers construction contracts on primary routes in approximately 12 counties in northwest Iowa.
Maintain maximum efficiency in staffing and operation of the Mason City Construction Office.
Ensure Contractors adhere to plans, specifications, and standards requirements
Evaluate Traffic Control and Staging needed to perform the work
Perform audits and prepare as-built records when construction is complete
Communicate with internal Iowa DOT staff, Contractors, utility companies, and the public
Assist Design by collecting field data and providing input to be used in plan preparation
You will directly support employees at our Mason City Resident Construction Office. This team will be administering $32 million of projects to improve the bridges and roadway during the 2023 Construction Season.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Three years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering, one year of which must have included project management or lead work responsibilities.

Do you love making sure things are built correctly? As a Construction Highway Technician Senior, you will spend your day making roads safer through sampling, testing, and inspecting construction projects year-round.

- performing mathematical calculations to ensure compliance with project plans, percent complete, quantity used, and areas measured

This position requires a high volume of computer and software use. To be successful in this position, you will need high proficiency with typing and digital data entry.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

As a Transportation Engineer Manager, your duties will include, but are not limited to:

Provide technical engineering assistance to subordinate professional engineers in the design of detailed contract plans for construction of all types of highway structures from simple to complex.

Provide support to the Construction and Materials Bureau and the District Offices for timely solutions to construction problems involving structural concepts.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Reviews capital improvement project design and construction for compliance with Statewide Urban Design and Specifications (SUDAS), City of Ankeny and Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) standards, and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
Assists with the preparation of the City’s annual Capital Improvement Program (CIP), including developing public improvement concepts and generating conceptual cost estimates.
Performs construction administration and periodic observation on public improvement projects including leading preconstruction meetings, preparing payment applications, reviewing change orders, and overseeing project closeouts.
Plans, organizes and conducts traffic data collection and analysis, including high-resolution data and traffic signal performance measures (ATSPM).
Prepares and reviews traffic engineering studies and reports. Studies may include operations and safety studies, traffic control and signal warrant studies, traffic impact studies, vehicle count and speed studies, gap studies, and regulatory and warning traffic sign or pavement marking studies.
Field review and creation of work orders for regulatory guide sign installation for existing or new streets and subdivisions.
Development, implementation and evaluation of traffic signal timing plans to achieve operational and safety goals.
Entry Requirements and Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or closely related field; and a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible work experience in civil or traffic engineering; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of modern traffic engineering principles and practices; basic knowledge of AutoCAD software (or equivalent) and ArcReader GIS software (or equivalent) and traffic analysis software (e.g. Synchro, VISSIM, Sidra); ability to coordinate with Technicians and other Public Works Divisions and City Departments; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to communicate and cooperate with officials, co-workers, contractors, and the general public.

Maintains and updates base mapping layers related to the geographic information system (GIS) and asset/work management system (Cartegraph) of the Engineering and Public Works Department.

Provides residential plan review for building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and/or fire codes.
